The Story
Madison Street from 14th Street to Memorial Drive will be classified as a principal arterial, while Hawthorne Avenue from Madison to Columbus Street will be classified as a minor arterial. Council approved the state-proposed changes unanimously Sept. 21. The classifications affect eligibility for state and federal transportation funding, not current speed limits, traffic rules or construction plans.

City Council tabled WisDOT's proposed road-classification changes 9-0 while seeking more information. The proposal would change 0.31 miles of Madison Street, from 14th Street to Memorial Drive, from minor arterial to principal arterial and one mile of Hawthorne Avenue, from Madison Street to Columbus Street, from principal arterial to minor arterial.

Bittner made the motion and Dahlke seconded it; Derby, B. LeClair, Brandt, Petri, Dahlke, Stechmesser, Wachowski, D. LeClair and Bittner voted yes.
